The first mention of the Holy Spirit on the pages of our story happens in Genesis 1:2 “The earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” The Spirit of God has been present from the beginning. It’s important for us to know this. I’m not going to use these next few months to do a study on the Trinity, but I think it is vital to remember, that from the very beginning of our story, every part of the Godhead was present and has been active.
It is revealed again how active they are in verse 26, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;…” As a visual person I love the visual of a holy seed being placed in me that is reflective of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. It could cause us to ask ourselves at times when we act a certain way, or say a certain thing, or feel a certain emotion, “Wonder where I got that from?”
But what a beautiful way to begin our story. ALL of God was a part of it. A part of our forming, our very DNA. What a heritage. God brought every aspect of His character, His heart, His power, His spirit, His love to our birth. When the sperm of your father met the egg of your mother, regardless of the state of your parents or the circumstances of your arrival, a holy thing happened. The breath of God, the Spirit of God was placed into you and you were formed. When that revelation happens to a heart it makes the thought of destroying life unimaginable. How could our humanness destroy something that is holy?
I have been at both a birth and a death in my life. I wish everyone I know could experience the entrance of life into the world and the exit of life from the world. They are holy.
As I watched my first birth, the birth of my now sixteen year old niece Lauren, I watched as they cleared her air passages and that first gasp of air went in and the first breath escaped. Many talk about the sound. It sounds like, “Yah – weh”
As I stood by the bed of my mother-in-law over a decade ago and watched the last thing she ever did be a huge exhale of breath, the sound was resonate again, “Yah-weh”. You are here because of the holy breath of God that was breathed into you. Some spend their entire life resisting the very thing that created them. Some spend their life missing the beautiful fullness the Holy Spirit offers to them. But just as we all come in with “Yah-weh” on our lips. We will leave with “Yah-weh” on our lips. The question is will He have captured our hearts? Every knee will one day bow. Every tongue will one day confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord.
